Bloomsburg Softball Wins Pair; Hutchinson Inches Closer to Record
WASHINGTON, DC--The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a pair of games from Columbia Union on Friday by scores of 9-1 and 17-0. With the two wins, coach Jan Hutchinson is needs just two more wins to become the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career softball wins surpassing Augustana's Sandy Jerstad who retired with 1,011 wins. In her 29th season as head coach, Hutchinson has 1,010 softball wins, 233 losses and five ties.
In game one, the Huskies scored four times in the second inning with Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) both hitting two-run homers in the inning. The Huskies used the long ball again in the third when Stacey Krupiewski (Trooper/Methacton) hit a solo homer and in the seventh inning when Taylor hit her second two-run shot of the game. Pitcher Ashley Lynn (Riverside/Danville) went the distance allowing just three hits and striking out 12.
In game two, pitcher Tara Reed just missed out on a five-inning perfect game when she allowed a two-out single to Tiffany Clark in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reed finished with seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Offensively, the Huskies opened a 5-0 lead after three innings, then put the game away with a nine-run fourth inning. Melissa Leeper (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) hit a two-run homer in the inning for the inning's big hit. In the fifth, Missy Bachert (Coplay/Parkland) added a three-run homer for the Huskies.
The Huskies, 7-6, play at Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday.
